Sean's Story Questions 2 and 6

Question 2: In your opinion what is one of the biggest benefits of inclusion? Include one detail from the video to support your answer.

I think that inclusion allows children with disabilities and the children around them to learn from one another.  Valuable lessons can be learned from peer interaction.  Sean's friends helped show him how he should behave and taught him important social skills.  Sean's classmates learned that not everyone is the same, but everyone should be shown kindness and respect.

Question 6: How did the video demonstrate the critical role expectations play in a child's education?

I think that expecting more usually elicits more.  The video supported this by showing Sean's growth in the public first grade classroom.  In this environment, he was expected to learn and achieve on a higher level than many thought was possible or fair.  As a result, Sean's knowledge and comprehension rose to meet that level of expectation.  Despite struggles early on, he gained skills that year that he may never have gotten at a school that expected less from him.

  1. Regarding your response to question 2, I agree completely. All people, even us today are continuing to learn from our peers and our experiences around them. Giving students with disabilities the opportunity to gain these experiences would be a huge learning point for all students and people involved. Looking at the video, everyone involved with Sean learned and gained from that year of inclusion.

  2. I 100% agree with your response to Question 6. Even though Sean may be unique he is more than capable of accomplishing anything we can. He may have hit a few bumps in the road during the school year, but he still graduated with his classmates and is moving on to bigger and better things. People shouldn't lower their expectations just because a student learns differently.

  3. I also agree with your response to Question 2. Sean's classmates even spoke fondly of him at the end of the video. They recognized his educational and social growth and also acknowledged the role they played in helping him take those developmental steps.

  4. I wonder how many students - even in this class - may have been influenced to be in this major because of peers in their classes who had specific learning needs or disabilities.

  5. I agree with your response to question two as well. I feel like especially in the video the audience could see not only Sean learning from his fellow students but also his fellow students learning from him.

  6. 6. How did the video demonstrate the critical role expectations play in a child's education?
Both parents and teachers throughout the video showed their expectations for both of the boys. The video shows how the expectations are being pushed harder and harder. Even kids with special needs need to be pushed and challenged. Parents and teachers wanted these boys to have many opportunities in life and achieve goals.
