The Other Sister - Post 3
My favorite part of the entire movie would have to be when Carla's mother was teaching her how to dance before she went. It showed that her mother does love her undoubtedly but at the same time feels as if she still needs to control every aspect of her life. As seen when Carla asks her to teach her how to slow dance but she refuses to teach her how to do so.

I also though Professor White chose a great movie to tie into the class material even though she normally doesn't incorporate them into lectures. Carla aloud us to see that even the people with intellectual disabilities that society may not see as admirable, can do anything they want to achieve that "normal" life that we all thrive for.
The Other Sister
I just though I would make my post for The Other Sister because I wanted to know if anyone else noticed the determination that she had no matter the circumstances she was facing. Obviously she was determined but specifically when her mother told her no or she couldn't do something she was set on proving her as well as others who doubted her very wrong.
I really enjoyed this movie because it gave us an in depth look inside what someone with an intellectual disability actually goes through on a daily basis without us feeling sorry for her we actually sympathize and realize how challenging their lives are.

I loved "The Other Sister!" It makes people realize that just because people have a disabilitie doesn't mean they can't live out there dreams and live a "normal life." Carla wanting to go to college and succeed in her future gives me hope for our society in the way we look at people with disabilities. Instead of considering them incapable society can look at them as hard working adults or even hard working students. That they can live up to there full potential! I think this movie should be played in every special and regular classrooms to show that you are capable to do anything you set your mind to, which is very true. "In order to achieve you have to believe." And Carla truly believed she could do it, and she did. Sorry I'm being cheesy, I really believe this movie brings a beautiful concept to the table.

The Other Sister Reflection

I thought this movie was wonderful. I loved how it showed Carla going from a girl being babied by her mother to a woman making decisions about her own life and how she wanted to live it. Carla was a very relatable character, in that many people have parents that are overprotective and push too much. It was a very well done movie showing how capable and independent people with disabilities are. It gives a good understanding to how different people with disabilities are too. That environment has a lot to do with the success of someone and they shouldn't be told they can't do something because how they perceived someone with a disability.

Self determination : Carla shows self determination when she decides she wants to go to school to be a vet. She is very adamant about going and doesn't give up until her parents consent. She is also determined to get her own apartment and asserting her independence from her parents.
Learned Helplessness: and Example from the movie would be when Danny is talking about living on his own, Carla says she could never do that. Because her mother has practically babied her since she's gotten back from the school Carla believes she can't be independent.
Person Centered Planning: an example would be the school she went to, they encouraged Carla's family to listen to her and her decisions about her life when she ran away because she'd do it again. They were supportive of Carla's decisions to be a vet's assistant and the school's outlook on the teaching was person centered. They had rules about parents visiting and Carla even said it made the parents more upset than it made the kids happy. Another example would be when she finally spoke up to her mother and decided to plan her own wedding and live her life like she wanted.

Two supports that Carla needed to function in her environment was her family and the special school she went to. It was apparent from the film that the school had helped her a lot with understanding what life outside the school was like. You can assume that it was a very supportive, nurturing environment which probably led to her success in the poly tech school. I make these assumptions based on how Danny grew up. He went to schools and was bullied and called "stupid" so much that even he started to believe it and almost gave up if it wasn't for Carla. The second support would be her family and the housekeeper. I could see how much Carla loved the housekeeper and how the housekeeper would show her how to cook and help with things that Carla used when she lived on her own. Her dad was a pretty big support too, at least more so than her mother and her sisters.

I would classify Carla as having a mild disability, because she interacted with others in a way that showed she could somewhat understand their feelings. One thing that was pointed out in the film was that she was able to pass her class in a "regular school" with "regular teachers" which she was very proud of. This shows that she can keep up in a general ed school without the assistance of resource teachers or extra help. She was also able to take care of herself by herself in her apartment showing that she could be independent, Carla needed very little help to do the things she wanted to do.

Conceptual skill: Carla showed she understood abstract ideas throughout the movie, an example being when she made necklaces for her family in the beginning because her teacher said it would be a good idea to give her family presents.
Social skill: Carla showed several examples of social skills, she didn't know the appropriate time to discuss "doing it" as well as barking at dogs.
Practical skills: an example of a practical skill Carla showed was how she got her own apartment and knew how to take care of herself, like shutting off the gas and locking the door. She also had a pet fish that she took care of throughout the movie.
