The Other Sister

Watch the movie, The Other Sister.  We witness Carla's transition to adulthood. Give an example of how the movie portrays each of the following: self-determination (p. 110), learned helplessness (p. 110), and person-centered planning (p. 110).

  1. Self-determination- Carla wanted to be on her own. She did not want any help from her mother. She didn't like any of the things her mother was trying to make her do. A good example of self determination would be when she was telling her mother that she was going to plan her own wedding and she did not want any help from her mother

  2. learned helplessness- would be when carla passed her test but dan, her boyfriend, didn't. he was suffering from a sense of powerness. he wanted to pass the test because of his father.

  3. person-centered planning- a good example for this would be again when carla was telling her mother that she was going to plan her wedding and didn't need her mothers help. she was yelling at her mother and was telling her what she was going to do and how she was going to plan her wedding.
