In relation to
chapter 5, as well as the previous chapters we have discussed in class, Carla
and her family structure further demonstrate the content we have engaged in. In
chapter 4 we discussed the importance of family involvement in the educational
aspect of a child with a disability. In the film The Other Sister, Carla’s family is reluctant to accept her for who
she truly is, although they would like to see her succeed. The family enrolls
her in a program where they target her adaptive skills, and improve on those
that are not demonstrated quite as well. When Carla turns 18, she has completed
the program and must move home where she wishes to attend a high school and
take classes to earn a diploma. Through the support of her family, Carla passes
her exams and all of her classes. Similarly in chapter 5, Carla demonstrates
the two key characteristics used to define the term intellectual disability. She demonstrates a problem in her adaptive
behavior. Also, she demonstrates the improvement of adaptive behavior skills
that she otherwise lacked, prior to working with the instructors at her school
and with her family at home.
