#3 The Other Sister

Self-determination- There are multiple situations where Carla uses self-determination. She uses it when she says she wants to go to school. At first her parents aren’t for it but she runs away to show that an education is what she wants. She is also self-determined when she wants to live independently and when her parents don’t approve of her marrying Danny. Instead of giving up what she wants, she plans her own wedding.

Learned helplessness-   An example of this is whenever someone laughed around Carla she would get really upset because she felt like they were laughing at her when that wasn’t necessarily why they were laughing.

Person-centered planning- An example of person-centered planning is when Carla ran away and went back to her old school. When her parents came to pick her up, her old teacher told them that it’s better to trust and listen to what she wants to do. After that, Carla was able to make her own decisions.
