The Other Sister-Self Determination, Learned Helplessness and Person-Centered Planning

The movie portrays an example of self determination when Carla moves into her own apartment. This is one of the biggest and most important examples because there are many examples throughout Carla's life where she shows this. Carla struggled with being allowed to be independent but the entire time, she was self determined because she knew in her heart and mind that she could take care of herself. She knew that she was capable of living on her own, even when her mother discouraged it. She pushed on and finally got her own apartment.
Carla displays learned helplessness of trying to make her mother happy. She knows that the things she wants and dreams of doing and achieving in her life, she doesn't share with her mother. She doesn't try to make her mom happy anymore at the end of the movie when she tells her mom not to come to her and Daniel's wedding and that she would plan it all by herself. She stands up and makes herself happy because she has realized that making her mother happy at all times is impossible.
Carla shows personal-centered planning throughout her life. She was constantly thinking of her future and she never saw herself as any less than another person. She knew that after high school she wanted to go to college and then get a job. She wanted to get married and attend every event that any other person did.
