Reflection
I really enjoyed this movie. I like how it really demonstrates the life and future of a disabled girl. We really saw her grow from a young girl to finishing school and getting married. I think it is important for us to watch this so we get a good idea of the everyday life of the families and children that have disabilities.

The Other Sister #3
Carla demonstrates self-determination by not giving up on her goal of wanting to go back to school. Her mom doesn't support the idea and feels as if Carla will not make it. Carla accomplishes her goal of wanting to go to school and proves her mother wrong. Also Carla knows she wants to spend the rest of her life with Danny and her mother is very disapproving but Carla steps up and does what is best for her.
I feel as if when Carla is helping Danny build himself back up from failing that test would be an example of learned helplessness. I think that Carla knew she had to be there for Danny so that he would be there in return for her when she needed him.
Person-centered planning was when she made the decision to life on her own and to have her wedding the way she wanted it. She realized that these things were important to her and she wanted them to be the way she wanted.

The Other Sister #2
Carla demonstrated good social skills throughout the movie she just had issues knowing what was appropriate at certain times. Such as talking about "doing it". She also knew how to comprehend other peoples feelings because of her relationship with mother. She knew that doing the things her mother wanted her to do made her happy and Carla didn't want her mother to be upset.
Practical skills where shown when Carla moves into her own apartment, she is showing everyone that she has developed from being the nervous girl at the beginning of the movie with her fish to living on her own.
I feel as if Carla's ability to know what she wants and what she likes are examples of conceptual skills. She was able to understand situations and react the way she found best in her opinion, for example her wedding.

The disability that Carla has is a mild disability. The way she interacted with others showed that she was fully capable of understanding she just had difficulties responding in appropriate manner. She is able to live on her own and make her decisions, she needs a little support and extra help along the way. Carla's dad was a big supporter that helped her function in her environment in my opinion. I feel as if where her mother wasn't understanding that her father stepped up and had to accept the terms of her disability to be there for Carla. Another supporter was Danny, while his disability was a little worse than hers they both loved and supported one another.

The other sister.
This movie shows the struggles of a family with a child with a disability. Carla's determination after she comes home is amazing she's confident in herself and her abilities. Though her mother tried to shelter her and keep her under control. Her self-determination is very admirable when she already knows where she wants to go to college and what she wants to study. Plus standing up for herself and her soon to be husband David. Also for her to plan her own wedding it's awesome!
Reflections
I really enjoyed this movie. I thought it really showed some of the difficulties of having an intellectual disability as well as the importance of using the right terminology. It also showed people who might not know a lot about people with disabilities how independent a person with a disability can become if he/she chooses to do so. It shows the emotional stages that family members often go through when someone in their family has a disability. I thought it was very informative about intellectual disabilities and a wonderful representation.
#3 The Other Sister
Self-determination-
There are multiple situations where Carla uses self-determination. She uses it
when she says she wants to go to school. At first her parents aren’t for it but
she runs away to show that an education is what she wants. She is also
self-determined when she wants to live independently and when her parents don’t
approve of her marrying Danny. Instead of giving up what she wants, she plans
her own wedding.
Learned helplessness- An
example of this is whenever someone laughed around Carla she would get really
upset because she felt like they were laughing at her when that wasn’t
necessarily why they were laughing.
Person-centered planning-
An example of person-centered planning is when Carla ran away and went back to
her old school. When her parents came to pick her up, her old teacher told them
that it’s better to trust and listen to what she wants to do. After that, Carla
was able to make her own decisions.
#2 The Other Sister
Social skill- Carla utilizes social skills throughout the
movie. She is constantly communicating with other characters and understanding
what they are saying. When Clara and
Danny check to see if they passed their class, Carla can read that Danny is
upset when he gets upset and starts crying because he didn’t pass. This
particular example meets the definition of social skills because she was able
to read that Danny wasn’t happy like she was and she was able to react in an
appropriate way.
Practical skill- An example of when Carla uses practical
skills is when she moves into her own apartment. Danny also uses practical
skills when he uses transportation through the bus system so he can go to work.
Both of these are examples of practical skills because they’re skills a person
needs for everyday life. The responsibilities Carla needs for living independently
are cooking and cleaning. Danny is responsible to use the bus system to be able
to go to work.
Conceptual skill- Throughout the movie, Carla was able to
understand abstract ideas which shows her use of conceptual skills because she
was able to comprehend to them using what she already knew and applying it to
the situation.

Carla had a mild disability, she was able to
understand and comprehend what people were saying but she had trouble
responding in an appropriate way. She was able to do well in school. Also, She
was able to live on her own and be independent. Two supports that Carla had was
her family as well as Danny. Her family could help her by offering their
support of graduating high school, moving into an apartment, and even marrying
Danny. Danny supported her emotionally. His disability seemed to be a bit more
severe but they understood what the other was going through, they could take care
of each other.
Post #9 Reflection of the movie in my own opinion
Before class last Wednesday, i had never heard of the movie. After class, i was so excited to be able to watch the full movie from the clips that were shown in class. While watching this move, i was able to see how just because Carla has a disability it doesnt make her any different from anyone. Carla was capable of living on her own, talking to people, and even being in a relationship. I loved that Carla found someone that made her happy. Carla didn't one time let the fact that she had a disability get in the way from anything in life.
Post #4 Reflection of the movie in my own opinion
The movie The Other Sister is a movie that I've never heard of until last week in class. As soon as I got out of class, I was determined to finish it. I went straight to my dorm room and finished watching it. This movie teaches all of us that no matter what ever may be wrong with us, disability or not, all things are possible. Carla taught me that independence is a major role that we all need to take more pride in whether if we may have a disability or not. Carla's mind was set on her love for Danny, and nothing stopped her, not even her mother. She taught herself to adapt to others in a way that she felt socially accepted and was able to do anything and everything she set her mind to. I really enjoyed this movie and I will recommend it to others who have not seen it. :-)

Post #3 Classification of Carla's disability
I would classify Carla's disability as moderate because she is fully capable of being able to accomplish most things on her own. She is able to comprehend a conversation between others, she is able to do anything a normal human-being can do besides having a mild disability that is obvious to others. Carla's ability to doing things has grown larger than when she was younger. She has developed more and more social skills and how to properly interact with other people on a daily basis.
This movie was very effecting while watching it. While i was watching i dicovered the fact of how important it is to let everyone live their own life without putting imput. Sometimes imput or an opinion can be good, but you also need to realize that it's their life, and not yours. Carlas mom thought that everything she did was the correct way of doing it because it made her happy. Everything her mom was doing was completely the opposite of what Carla wanted. Carla wanted to live life how she wanted, and she stands up to her mom when she tries to tell her marrying danny was the wrong thing.
My favorite part of this movie is when Carla is standing up to her mother about the wedding. Carlas mom tries to tell her that marrying Danny is not the right thing to do, and Carla tells her that she doesnt care what she thinks. Danny made Carla happy and that's all that mattered to her. I think that controlling Carla was not a good idea, because it made Carla very uncomfortable. Carla wanted to live the life that she wanted to live, not what her mother wanted.
Title The other sister #6
I feel as if this title gives of the impression that "the other sister" is considered different from the other sisters. Yes, Carla does have a disability, but that doesn't make her different from her other sisters. Carla is capable of anything, and has the self-determination to succeed in her life. Carla should not be labeled as the other sister, because she works just as hard as the other sisters.
the other sister #5
Self-determination- Carla wanted to be on her own. She did not want any
help from her mother. She didn't like any of the things her mother was
trying to make her do. A good example of self determination would be
when she was telling her mother that she was going to plan her own
wedding and she did not want any help from her mother
the other sister #4
learned helplessness- would be when carla passed her test but danny, her
boyfriend, didn't. he was suffering from a sense of powerness. he wanted
to pass the test because of his father's orders. Danny did not have the support from his family like Carla did. Danny did recieve support from Carla to push him.
The other sister #3
person-centered planning- a good example for this would be again when
carla was telling her mother that she was going to plan her wedding and
didn't need her mothers help. she was yelling at her mother and was
telling her what she was going to do and how she was going to plan her
wedding.
The other sister #2
I would consider Carla as having a moderate disability. I
would define her’s as moderate because, even though you can tell that she has a
disability, she is still able to do and function most of the things other kids
can do. Carla can walk, read, write, spell, talk, and she was even capable of
passing her exam. Carla had a supporting family throughout her journey which
was a big help. Even though she did not understand and like some of the things
her mother did, her mother was still there for her.
The other sister #1
In the film, Carla shows conceptual skills throughout the
movie. I think that she showed these skills by telling her mother that she was
creating her own wedding on her own. She did not want what her mother wanted,
she wanted what she wanted. She also shows conceptual skills by creating bracelets
for each one of her family members. Social skills that Carla used throughout
the video sometimes ranged. Carla knows how to hold a conversation with
someone, but sometimes the right things do not come out. She doesn’t hold back
anything, and says how she feels. She used directional skills by when she ran
away and she ended back up at the school she was at. She remembered where this
was because she felt comfortable there.

In this post I have decided to share with you my favorite part of the entire film. My favorite part of the movie was when Carla stood up to her mother and told her that she wanted to plan her own wedding and she will be marrying Daniel and if her mother doesn't like that then she shouldn't even bother coming to the wedding. This was my favorite in the film because Carla finally stood her ground and fought back for something she strongly believed in. I think at this point her mother finally realizes that Carla isn't that much different than her other two daughters. They got to plan their own wedding so why didn't Carla get to plane her wedding? Her disability was the only thing her mother saw, her mom never saw Carla as just being Carla until she stood up for herself. I love this part in the movie because her mother couldn't tell her how to live her own life, Carla took control of her own life and how she was going to live it.
After watching this film I was truly inspired by the overall meaning of it. I thought that the concept of the film was absolutely amazing. The movie showed a young girl who never let her disability define who she was as a person and never stopped her from achieving her dreams. Carla overcame any obstacle that was in her path with ease which is something we can all relate too. Many people doubted Carla's ability to succeed in a regular school but she worked hard at it and overcame people's judgments. Her mother doubted almost everything that Carla wanted to do, her mother didn't think that she could succeed in school and she didn't think that Carla could live independently but Carla never let that stop her from reaching her goals. I think we could all take away some very important life lessons from the film. I truly enjoyed watching it and would recommend it to anyone, it was definitely an emotional movie so make sure you come prepared and have a box of tissues sitting next to you though.
The Other Sister, Post 2- Disability and Support
Carla could be classified as having a mild disability. Carla is fortunate to have a strong social support with her family. They treat her with respect and support her (eventually) in her choices to go to a public vocational school, living alone in her own apartment, dating, and finally, marriage. Carla seem to struggle with public transportation. A technical support that she could benefit from would be a smart phone with not only GPS but there are bus route apps that will not only help evaluate what bus and route to take, but you can also bookmark your most frequent routes and even see where your bus is on route.
It is important for Carla to have supports so she can acquire independence. Dr. Johnson said it best, "Independence can give Carla......dignity."

Self-Determination:
An example of self-determination in the movie The Other Sister, was when Carla told her mother that she wanted to get an apartment and live on her own. Her mother once again couldn't look past Carla's disability and told Carla that she didn't think she was capable of living by herself. Eventually her mother allows Carla to prove herself and her mother soon realizes that she was wrong about Carla. Carla could indeed live on her own and because of her self-determination she showed her family that she was more than capable of being independent.
Learned Helplessness:
An example of learned helplessness that was demonstrated within the film was when Carla says she feels like Daniel will never be good enough for her, in her mother's eyes. Even though Carla's mother sees how much Daniel and Carla truly love each other she still tells Carla that Danny will never be good enough for her, she disapproves of their relationship no matter what.
Person-Centered Planning:
Carla demonstrates person-centered planning by always having a positive attitude and strive to reach her goals. She is constantly thinking of the next step that she is going to take in life whether it be getting married or continuing her education to be able to get a job someday. Carla never allows her disability to define who she is as a person.

The Other Sister Post 5
At the beginning of the movie Carla's parents decide to send Carla to a school for those with special needs. I believe that this is a good experience for Carla because she is able to experience going to school and receiving the help that is needed to gain an education. When Carla comes back home she immediately wants to attend a regular high school. Although her mother does not agree with this decision Carla is certain that she is capable to gain an education at this school. When Carla mentions this to her parents they are automatically faced with the idea of inclusion and if placing Carla in a regular high school setting would be appropriate for Carla's needs.
The Other Sister Post 4
The title "The Other Sister" has a very significant meaning to the movie. To me the title describes how Carla is noticed differently in the family because of her disability. Her family does not have the mind set that Carla is capable of doing anything she sets her mind to. As we had discussed the importance of family and sibling relationship in class we can all agree that the support of a family is important. Carla's sisters have lived normal lives and received the support from both parents as one of her sisters got married. I believe that the movie was titled "The Other Sister"because Carla is looked at as an individual who needs special attention. I agree with Kaitlyn in that when Carla was sent to the school for special needs her family concentrated on the lives of Carla's two sisters.

In my opinion I would classify Carla as having a moderate disability. Even though it is obvious that Carla has some sort of disability she is still able to go to school and learn in a classroom setting just like other kids. Carla is also more than capable of passing her exams in her classes and living in an apartment by herself. Two supports that Carla needs in her environment would have to be her family and Daniel. Carla's family has always been a huge support system for her, even when her mother couldn't see past her disability someone in her family whether it be her father or her sisters were there supporting her dreams every step of the way. Daniel is another VERY important support system that Carla needs in her environment. I think Daniel and Carla understood each other because they both had a disability and they could help each other through hardships because they had that mutual understanding. You could see in the movie that they both truly loved each other and supported each other's dreams. I feel that these two supports would help Carla to succeed in any environment that she was exposed too.
The Other Sister Post 3
In the Other Sister Carla demonstrates conceptual, social and practical skills
Conceptual skills are demonstrated when she creates bracelets for each member of the family. This is an example of conceptual skills because she was able to think creatively about how to make the bracelets and the idea of having each bracelet spell the name of her family members.
Social skills are demonstarted throughout the entire movie. Carla is capable of talking to those around her but it is obvious that her language is sometimes not appropriate for her age. For example, when her mother takes her to the charity event Carla insists on barking at the dogs while a speech was being given. This demonstrates how Carla is not aware of the appropriate times to talk out in public. Another example is when they are at her sisters wedding rehearsal and Carla and Danny scream out that they had "done it" on Thanksgiving. This was not the appropriate time to tell her family that she had done this act especially in a room full of people.
Practical skills are demonstrated when she ran away from home after realizing she was not happy being at home. She managed to find her way back to the school her mother sent her to which demonstrated that place was a significant spot in her life.

The Other Sister, Post 1- Skills demonstrated
In the movie "The Other Sister", the character Carla showed some deficits in social skills. For example; causing the dogs to bark at a social event, talking about "doing it" out loud in a public park, becoming hysterical during an event when she becomes embarrassed and thinks people are laughing at her, running away when she is unhappy at home, and pulling her boyfriend Danny up on stage with her during her sisters wedding ceremony. She also showed some deficits in practical intelligence, such as cooking, understanding the public transportation system, not knowing whether to call 911 or not because she hears a car alarm going off, and not realizing that she could have asked the sales clerk to remove the makeup she had just applied to one side of her face, instead of going all the way home like that.
In the movie, The Other Sister, Carla demonstrates conceptual, social, and practical skills throughout many different parts in the movie. As far as conceptual skills go Carla demonstrated those by taking lettered beads and spelling out the names of her family members and her old teacher and then making necklaces out of the lettered beads. Another example of conceptual skills shown by Carla was her decision to plan her own wedding. She wanted her wedding day to be special and wanted to plan it herself, using her creativity skills Carla planned her wedding day exactly how she wanted it to be with no regards to her mother's wishes. Carla demonstrated a social skill when she was talking to Daniel at the dance after he realized that he had failed his class, she automatically knew he was upset and tried to comfort and encourage him. Another example of a social skill demonstrated within the movie is when she goes to register for classes at college and she sees that people are cutting in front of Daniel in line and she tells them to stop and that it is not fair! Practical skills were also shown throughout the film an example of a practical skill that Carla demonstrated would be that she was able to find her way back to her old school when she got upset at home and decided to runaway she knew exactly how to get back to her old school where she felt most comfortable. Another example of a practical skill shown in the film would be when Carla got her own apartment, this step in life allowed her to grow as an individual and made her realize that she is responsible now that she is essentially on her own.
The Other Sister Post 2
Self-Determination
There are plenty of ways in which Carla exhibits self-determination. Carla demonstrates the concept of setting goals for herself and being able to look past the negative comments and down put when people tell her that she is unable to accomplish her goals. The one event in the movie that stood out to me where Carla demonstrated self-determination was when she told her mother that she wanted to get her own apartment. Her mother told her that she didn't think Carla was capable of having her own place but Carla knew of her capabilities and didn't stop in the process of accomplishing this goal.
Learned Helplessness
Throughout the movie Carla's mother pressured her into doing activities that were entertaining to her but not quite to Carla such as playing tennis. Carla did these activities in order to please her mother. By the end of the movie Carla realized that she should start doing things to please only herself when she told her mother she was getting married and her mother denied the approval of helping and being there. Carla realized that being independent and doing things to please herself is the only way she would be able to live the life she wanted to.
Personal-Centered Planning
Throughout the movie Carla is determined to always take the next step in her life. This is exampled through several events. As soon as Carla came home she was ready to start school and her mother denied the idea and mentioned that Carla should take a "vacation." When Carla mentioned that she wanted to get her own apartment her mother denied the idea again saying that Carla was not capable of owning her own apartment but Carla did not let this ruin her goals. Personal-Centered Planning is also demonstrated when Carla tells her mother that she will be marrying Danny. Her mother denies the idea stating that Carla is marrying too soon and should take the time to meet other men.

Carla demonstrates having mild disability. She does not present a high function of disability as she is able to attend a public school and be placed in a classroom with other students who do not require the same kind of attention. Carla is able to live on her own in her own apartment where she takes on the responsibility of providing for herself. She is also able to make decisions that provide for a better lifestyle. The two functions that Carla needs in order to function is the constant love and positive support from her father and eventually her mother as well as the unconditional love from Danny. The love and support her family gave her helped to better her lifestyle. For example, when Carla moved into her own apartment her parents provided a check list to ensure that Carla would remember the necessities to keep herself safe. Carla needs the unconditional love from Danny because he gives her the comfort she needs in order to function. Danny is able to relate to Carla and he sees past her abilities for the person she truly is.

The Other Sister
To me the meaning of this title really focuses on how her other sisters are looked up on and more important to her mother. I think that she just wants to be normal and that her other sisters are looked up on. Carla is treated differently in different ways that makes her feel differently about herself.
Post 5
My favorite part of the movie "The Other Sister" is when Carla fights with her mother and insists that she can plan her OWN wedding and she does not need her mothers help. This is my favorite part because it's a very good example of how independent Carla is throughout the movie. At this very moment in the movie I believe that Carla's mother figured out that Carla was not as helpless as she thought that she was and Carla had wants and opinions just like anybody else. At that moment I think Carla's mother realized she wasn't so different from her other two daughters.
The Other Sister Post #3
Carla portrays self determination because she always sets goals for herself and until they are reached she doesn't give up. She believes in her self. For example when she passes the test she is very excited and worked hard to get there.
Carla portrays learned helplessness because throughout the movie she is trying to gain her mothers approval for everything she does. She doesn't know otherwise. She feels like she will never be good enough. She feels as if she is always compared to other people and isn't what her mother wants her to be.
Carla portrays person centered planning because she always thinks about what is next in her life. To her it is important that she never lets her disabilities get in her way and she always does what she wants no matter how long. She was successful in her goals of getting married and finishing school to be where she wants to be.

Post 4- The impact of this move on me
This movie impacted me greatly. I think it was a very moving and inspirational movie. It proved to me that no matter if you have a disability or not whatever you have your heart set on you can achieve it with determination. Many people doubted throughout the movie that Carla was capable of moving out into her own apartment and getting married but Carla showed them that it was possible. I believe that these same examples happen all the time in everyday life when it comes to people with disabilities. Some people doubt that people with disabilities can achieve the same things as people with non-disabilities. This is not the case. I believe that the movie "The Other Sister" is a good reminder that anything is possible with hope and determination whatever the case may be.

In my opinion I would say that Carla has a moderate disability. Carla is obviously slow throughout this movie and is different than her siblings but Carla is still capable of doing many things that her family can do. Carla is very independent she even lived by herself in her own apartment throughout the movie. Carla decided to plan her own wedding. If someone had a extremely severe disability they would not be capable of planning a wedding of their very own. Throughout the whole movie everything proves that Carla is a very independent woman who can do anything that she sets her mind to. Many facts throughout the movie show that Carla's disability isn't an excuse for achieving what she wants to.
The Other Sister Post #2
I think that Carla has a moderate disability. I think this because she can do a lot of things normally but few things come difficult to her. She was able to live without her mother and go to high school on her own. Carla was able to learn most of her skills that she had not been so confident of successful with before. She also had a caring support system at home which also was an important factor in her life. Without this she wouldn't have grown and develop so many important skills.

Give an example of how the movie portrays each of the following: self-determination (p. 110), learned helplessness (p. 110), and person-centered planning (p. 110).
There are many ways that Carla portrays self-determination in this movie. The one that stuck out to me most though was when Carla was determined to go to "Normal" classes so she could further her career after school and become a veterinarian . Carla took a test to get into Normal classes and she passed. Without self determination this would not have been possible for Carla.
Carla showed many examples of Person-Centered Planning throughout this movie. The prime example that I noticed was when Carla wanted to plan her own wedding and have it exactly as she wanted without the help of her mother. Carla wanted to be independent and plan things on her own without the help of anyone else to prove that she was capable.
An example of Learned Helplessness in this movie would be when Carla found out that she passed the test at school that she had been hoping to pass. She soon found out that her friend did not pass the test. This is an example of Learned Helplessness because Carla had no control of this situation she could not change that fact that her friend did not pass the test and she did. Carla had no way to avoid this negative situation.

The Other Sister Post #1
In the film, The Other Sister, Carla demonstrates conceptual skills by making bracelets for everyone in her family and spelling out their names in beads. She also plans out her wedding in her own way and not considering what her mother wants. It is her day and it will be done how she wants it. Social Skills are in multiple parts of this movie. For example, her skills of communication are not appropriate towards her age just by the vocabulary she uses. In the movie she says "doing it" and that she has "done it." The time and place was not always appropriate so that I think is where her social skills come into play. Carla does use many practical skills. For example, when she realized she didn't want to be at home she managed to run away and fly right back to where she can from. She knew exactly where to go and how to get there and that is important to have in life.
Post One: The Meaning of this Title to Me
The movie "The Other Sister" said a lot to me. I believe that even the title to this movie speaks a lot. In my opinion this movie is entitled "The Other Sister" because Carla is pushed aside sometimes by the rest of her family. Carla's family believes that Carla is incapable of doing anything on her own or making any decisions for herself. Her two sisters have gone on and lived normal lives. One of her sisters even is engaged. Carla got sent to a school for special needs kids for 10 years and I believe that during that time Carla's parents just focused on the children that they had at home with them at the time which was Carla's two other sisters. That is how I believe she became known as "The Other Sister" because she was the different sister who needed special attention and was considered to be different compared to her other sibling's.
The Other Sister: self determination, learned helplessness, and person centered planning.
Carla is an amazing example of a young woman with
determination and will power to be herself and not settle for a thing beyond
that. I think we all can learn something from her, this movie, and apply it to
our lives. Examples of how the movie portrayed self-determination, learned
helplessness, and person centered planning are as followed.
Self- determination: Carla has self-determination
throughout the entire movie, setting goals for herself and not stopping when
someone claimed that those goals were unobtainable. We see this, for example,
when she speaks up and says she wants to go to school to become and vet. Tech.
Her mother is very quick to try and lead her away from that idea but Carla
remains persistent and does start taking classes towards gaining a higher
education. We also see this when she wants to live on her own in her own
apartment. Her mother does the same thing but eventually allows for Carla to
prove herself and see’s that she is capable of doing so.
Learned helplessness: Personally I believe that Carla’s
mother gives us an example of learned helplessness in the movie when she
continuously tries to justify herself regarding why Carla was put in the school
for her childhood. She feels that she needs to justify herself and her actions.
Another example of this is how Carla feels throughout the movie when trying to
gain her mothers approval. Due to her mother’s actions and comments, she feels
that she will never be good enough or nothing will be good enough for her: going
to school, living on her own, and her boyfriend Daniel.
Person centered planning: Carla shows person
centered planning throughout the whole movie. She is always thinking of the
next step in her life, never allowing for her disabilities to limit her dreams
and goals of continuing her education to get a job and then to later get
married. It is important that we point out that Carla was proactive with her goals
and future, never allowing for anything to hold her back or to see herself and
her possible future in any different way.
The Other Sister: Carla's Support
Two examples of
supports that Carla had in the movie are her sisters and her boyfriend, Daniel.
Her sisters are examples of strong and supportive advocates that were there to
push her towards her goals as well as to speak on her behalf in a positive
manner when opposing forces, (her mother), was wanting to do something that
Carla was against. Having advocates are extremely important in assisting her
with reaching her goals, encouraging her to do whatever she wanted, and
speaking out regarding her when she was unable to do so. This support can be
used in all environments and in any situation given. Daniel, also a young adult
with disabilities, is an example of a support that no one else could be to
Carla, they were alike and understood each other. Daniel, in my opinion had a
higher severity of disabilities, was able to connect with Carla over their
struggles they both faced. This type of support is also one that can be in all
environments and in any situation because it gives support that is unlike any
other. Daniels support to Carla and vice versa opened a window of full
acceptance, understanding, and dependability that everyone needs at some point
in their life.
The Other Sister: Severity of Disability
I personally would classify Carla as having mild
disabilities because her disabilities do not necessarily limit her. She is able
to do anything she wants to and we can see that from the entire movie! Carla
was able to live on her own, go to school, and achieve anything else she set as
a goal for herself. She is a great example of a strong woman who, despite any
disability she has, adapts in order to persevere and reach her goals.
The Other Sister Post #4, severity of disability
I believe Carla had a mild to moderate classification of her disability. She was able to live on her own and go to high school and succeed. However, Daniel was not able to succeed and Carla even said she would take care of him. He could have had a higher level of severity because of some of the skills he lacked. Carla was able to grasp most of the skills she lacked through her school and the support systems she had. It was pointed out in the movie that Daniel had little to no support at home, so that could relate to the severity of his disability. It also goes back to making clear that once diagnosed the child may not stay in the classification that they are first put in. Sometimes, with the right support and the right education anything can happen.
The Other Sister Post #3, Title
The title, "The Other Sister" already tells you something about the family's relationships. Carla had two sisters, but she was considered "the other sister" so from the start she was secluded. In chapter 4, it discussed the importance of the family and sibling relationships. The family should be accepting but can't just ignore the disability. They should all work together to help the child with a disability not become "the other" child.
The Other Sister Post #2, Inclusion or Not
In the beginning of the movie, Carla's parents argue about where to send her to school. Her mother wants to send her away but her father wants to keep her at home and in a general education school. They end up deciding to send her away, but I think this portrayed a good example of one of the many issues parents have to go through. It is a different case for every child and set of parents, but every one of them has to make this decision. They have to decide if inclusion is the best option, or not. Eventually Carla leaves her special school, and comes back to her home. That is where she decides that she wants to go to a regular high school. She is mature enough to make the decision for herself, and she choses to be in and inclusive environment to gain more education. That is also a good example that the child doesn't stay at the same level of intellectual disability their whole lives. She is able to participate in a general education class at an older age, now.
The Other Sister Post #1, Self Determination
In "The Other Sister", Carla expressed self determination all throughout her life. She went away to her "special school", and came back and had to adapt to living in her own home. She was faced with many transitions quickly after she came back. She was determined to go to high school, and she did. Not only did she just attend the high school but she succeeded against everyone's beliefs. She then moved out of her family's home and into her own apartment. She showed a self-determination to get to that point, and pushed herself to be able to live on her own because that's what she wanted and she worked through any obstacles to get where she wanted to be.
Moderate Disability
I would describe Carla's disability as moderate because she is able to do almost everything that a person without a disability could do. She went to school, she moved into her own apartment because she is independent and she even got married. Two supports that she needs in her environment are her family and Daniel. Her family has always been supportive in whatever she wants to do, even when her mom wasn't so sure, someone was always supporting Carla and her wishes and dreams. Daniel is another support that Carla needs in her environment. Daniel was the love of her life and he supported her in any and everything that Carla did. He was always right behind her and since they both had a disability, they had a mutual understanding of each other. They both knew how hard things were for the other so they worked so well together. Both of these supports would be best used in any environment that Carla is exposed to.
The Other Sister-Self Determination, Learned Helplessness and Person-Centered Planning
The movie portrays an example of self determination when Carla moves into her own apartment. This is one of the biggest and most important examples because there are many examples throughout Carla's life where she shows this. Carla struggled with being allowed to be independent but the entire time, she was self determined because she knew in her heart and mind that she could take care of herself. She knew that she was capable of living on her own, even when her mother discouraged it. She pushed on and finally got her own apartment.
Carla displays learned helplessness of trying to make her mother happy. She knows that the things she wants and dreams of doing and achieving in her life, she doesn't share with her mother. She doesn't try to make her mom happy anymore at the end of the movie when she tells her mom not to come to her and Daniel's wedding and that she would plan it all by herself. She stands up and makes herself happy because she has realized that making her mother happy at all times is impossible.
Carla shows personal-centered planning throughout her life. She was constantly thinking of her future and she never saw herself as any less than another person. She knew that after high school she wanted to go to college and then get a job. She wanted to get married and attend every event that any other person did.

Post #2 Self-Determination, Learned Helplessness, and Person-Centered Planning.
The movie: The Other Sister portrays each of the following:
Learned Helplessness shown throughout the following movie is shown in a couple of ways. The one example that stuck out to me the most is when Carla felt hopeless about her love and the relationship her and Danny held with one another. She felt hopeless because there was no support from the one every girl needs most "boy support" from, which was her evil mother. Carla's mother did not give her a chance and never had anything positive to say about Carla and Danny's relationship. All she kept telling Carla was that she could do so much better and needed to move on.
Carla is self-determined in such ways that she is determined to be just as normal as everyone else. She is determined to go to a normal school just like everyone else in her family and friends. She doesn't want to have to go through school with a learning disability learning in different ways than her peers. She wants to be able to receive a legit high school diploma that she worked hard for on her own.
Person-Centered Planning is demonstrated throughout this movie by Carla having her mind set on marrying Danny. Later in the movie, the way she plans her OWN wedding is pretty neat considering she does this without her mother.

Post #1 The meaning of this title from my own perspective
The title of this movie: The Other Sister means several different things to me. I feel as if this title relates to this movie because Carla's mom sees her other daughter as a better daughter and sister. Carla is treated differently in obvious and hateful ways rather than how her sister is treated. Carla's mom isn't very nice to her and has a sour attitude. Later on in the movie, Carla finally starts to realize their poor relationship with one another and even plans her OWN wedding...
The Other Sister- Post 5- Relationship with Classroom Content
In relation to
chapter 5, as well as the previous chapters we have discussed in class, Carla
and her family structure further demonstrate the content we have engaged in. In
chapter 4 we discussed the importance of family involvement in the educational
aspect of a child with a disability. In the film The Other Sister, Carla’s family is reluctant to accept her for who
she truly is, although they would like to see her succeed. The family enrolls
her in a program where they target her adaptive skills, and improve on those
that are not demonstrated quite as well. When Carla turns 18, she has completed
the program and must move home where she wishes to attend a high school and
take classes to earn a diploma. Through the support of her family, Carla passes
her exams and all of her classes. Similarly in chapter 5, Carla demonstrates
the two key characteristics used to define the term intellectual disability. She demonstrates a problem in her adaptive
behavior. Also, she demonstrates the improvement of adaptive behavior skills
that she otherwise lacked, prior to working with the instructors at her school
and with her family at home.
The Other Sister- Post 4
This film was incredibly inspirational in the fact that it
depicted a young girl with an intellectual disability, and yet managed to
portray her abilities and strengths in ways one would never think possible.
Although she has a mild to moderate functioning intellectual disability, you
may never even know by the astonishing abilities she reveals. Her competence
and determination allow her to tackle any barriers that stand in her way and
prevent her from reaching her goals. This film also depicts the lack of support
her family demonstrates towards her, specifically (the title singles her out
just because of her disability and they see her “differently” than the other
daughters in the family). It’s important to look past an individual’s disabilities
and see them as a person, because that is who they are. They have strengths and
weaknesses just as anyone else would. I highly recommend this movie to anyone,
mainly because we could all stand to learn a thing or two from Carla.
The Other Sister- Post 3
Carla is self-determined to go to a “normal” high school and
receive a “real” diploma, in order to become a veterinarian technician someday.
During the dance scene, it is evident that all of Carla’s hard work has paid
off and she has passed all of her exams in her “normal classes.” Learned
helplessness is demonstrated throughout the film, especially when Carla feels
like no matter what, Danny will never be good enough for her, in her mother’s
eyes. Although she loves him, no matter how hard she tries to win over her
mother’s approval, he will never be good enough for her, because her mother
believes she “can do better.” Not only did Carla wish to attend a “normal” high
school and take “regular classes,” but also she wanted an apartment all to
herself where she could grow independently and assume more responsibilities.
