I would classify Carla as having a moderate disability.
Although she lacks some adaptive behaviors, her disability is low functioning,
and that does not prevent her from going to school and learning just as other
kids would. She passes her exams in “normal classes,” and she is able to live
independently in her apartment and care for herself. Although she may have a
slight disability, she is able to overcome her weaknesses through her abilities
and prove that she can accomplish anything that she desires. Two supports that
Carla needs in order to function in her environment include simple reminders
from her family and the support and love from Danny. For example, in her
apartment, her parents created a sheet that lists reminders for her to consider
before rushing out the door. Without this sheet reminding her to turn off the
stove, she may cause a fire and not even realize it. These reminders are to
ensure that she is able to continue to live independently on her own, in the
environment of her own apartment. Secondly, Carla feels comforted by Danny and
most importantly she feels loved. She needs his support in order to function on
her own, especially because she doesn’t always feel as though her family quite
understands her. Danny is the only one that understands her, and looks past her
disabilities and loves her for being Carla, not the disability everyone else
tends to see.
