Carla is self-determined to go to a “normal” high school and
receive a “real” diploma, in order to become a veterinarian technician someday.
During the dance scene, it is evident that all of Carla’s hard work has paid
off and she has passed all of her exams in her “normal classes.” Learned
helplessness is demonstrated throughout the film, especially when Carla feels
like no matter what, Danny will never be good enough for her, in her mother’s
eyes. Although she loves him, no matter how hard she tries to win over her
mother’s approval, he will never be good enough for her, because her mother
believes she “can do better.” Not only did Carla wish to attend a “normal” high
school and take “regular classes,” but also she wanted an apartment all to
herself where she could grow independently and assume more responsibilities.
